Arnold said: “People see that I have more potential and efficiency in the midfield and that could be the route for me in the future, but who knows? It’s not for me to decide, I can only be put in the position specified by the coach. “But based on my conversations with Gareth Southgate, we explored the possibility of me playing in a central midfield position and that really excited me. I feel it will bring out the best in me for England and this is my most exciting time with the national team.”

“But I don’t really know what my best position is, it depends on the coach. In the last five or six years at Liverpool I’ve been free to go in and out of the centre as a full-back, create space on the right, pass near the touchline, create chances and get assists. In England, the coach has different requirements for full-backs, although technically they are two completely different positions on the pitch, but I can adapt to both systems. For a player like me, getting possession, controlling the game and controlling the tempo is the most important thing. It doesn’t matter if I play as a full-back or a midfielder, I’m a player who needs to be on the ball and want to be in charge throughout the game.”
