Due to their recent run of underwhelming performances, the Pakistani cricket team has drawn a lot of criticism. After defeats to the United States and India, the team captained by Babar Azam was eliminated from the T20 World Cup in 2024. Things, however, took a turn for the worst when they lost both matches in a humbling Test series against Bangladesh. In a video circulating on social media, former captain of the Pakistan cricket team Rashid Latif provided a harsh assessment of the sport’s state, declaring that “Pakistan cricket is currently in the ICU.”
“Pakistan cricket is currently in the ICU. They will need a professional doctor. They need technically sound professionals to run things, both physically and financially. Trainers and many other things are required. You can see there are many problems, whether it’s on the field or off the field,” he said.
In order to improve Babar Azam’s playing, Latif also suggested that he give up being captain. Both fans and experts have criticised Pakistan’s skipper Babar for his poor performance in the last several international matches.
Latif told Babar to focus more on his game, using Indian great Sachin Tendulkar as an example.
“We need to remember that he was removed forcefully as captain. When the mind is not functioning correctly, it affects the nerves as well. You try to play hard on every ball. He should let go of the idea of being a captain and focus on freeing himself from mental pressure. The issue seems to be more about mental stress than technical performance, and it’s apparent that he is struggling to cope with a significant amount of mental pressure,” said Latif.
