Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera and all-arounder
Angelo Mathews will go with Sri Lanka’s World Cup team as reserves.
Prior to Sri Lanka’s fourth league match against
Netherlands in Lucknow on Saturday, they are anticipated to join the team on
Friday. However, they can only be called up to the squad in the event of an
injury to another player. Due to a shoulder ache, fast bowler Matheesha
Pathirana missed their last game.
The only team without a victory in the competition
thus far is Sri Lanka, which is currently last in the points standings after
losing its first three games to South Africa, Pakistan, and Australia.
Their captain Dasun Shanaka was replaced by
all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne after he was already declared out of the
competition due to a quadriceps rupture that requires a three-week recuperation
period. In Shanaka’s absence, Kusal Mendis led Sri Lanka against Australia.
The 31-year-old Chameera would have been the first
choice for Sri Lanka’s World Cup team, but he was deemed unfit in time. In
June’s match against Afghanistan and the pregame for the World Cup qualifier,
he last appeared for Sri Lanka. He then originally missed time due to a torn
pectoral muscle that occurred before the World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe. After
getting well, he had another injury in August during the Lanka Premier League.
Since the opening match of the home series against
Afghanistan in June, Mathews has not participated in an ODI. He last
represented Sri Lanka in the Colombo Test against Pakistan in July. Wanindu
Hasaranga, a legspinner for Sri Lanka, is also out from the World Cup due to an
injury.
