[Saba Sports News] Travis Head, who got injured during the South Africa ODI series in September, is aiming to make a comeback in Australia’s fifth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Head fractured his finger against the Proteas during the fourth ODI when a short delivery by Gerald Coetzee caused the injury, forcing the opener to miss several games in the World Cup 2023.
The selection of Head for the World Cup despite having an injury, raised many questions in the Australian cricket circuit, but selectors picked him with the hope that he might recover in the second half of the tournament.
So far, the Men in Yellow have played two World Cup games against India and South Africa, but a disappointing performance by the team resulted in consecutive defeats, leaving them in the second-last position in the points table.
Head, who is recovering from the injury, has started his training and mentioned that things are progressing well and better than expected.
“It’s coming along well, and probably better than we hoped. When we decided not to go with surgery, which would have meant a 10-week recovery, we were told it would be a minimum six weeks with the splint before we could look at playing again” Head told cricket.com.au.
He further stated that he is hopeful to make a return in the match against the Netherlands, scheduled on October 25 in Delhi.
“Going by that plan, the Netherlands game will be just under six weeks from impact which is a pretty aggressive date so everything would have to go perfectly from here to make that deadline.
“But we’ll just see how it progresses over the next few days and I’m excited by the prospect of joining the boys over there later in the week,” he concluded.
Notably, Australian will face Sri Lanka on October 16 in Lucknow.
