[Saba Sports News] The Philadelphia 76ers have decided to part ways with an NBA award-winning player, not named James Harden. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported on Monday that the 76ers will release Montrezl Harrell, a veteran big man who is currently recovering from a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee.
Charania explains that this move is a response to a “roster crunch,” as the new season is about to begin, and emphasizes that the 76ers will continue to support Harrell in his rehabilitation and recovery.
Montrezl Harrell, who is 29 years old and was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2020, sustained this injury during an offseason workout in early August. Charania also mentions that Harrell is targeting a return after the All-Star break, which would be a remarkable comeback in just approximately six and a half months since his injury.
Even when Harrell was healthy last season, he didn’t have a particularly significant impact on the 76ers. He averaged only 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in 57 appearances while serving as a backup to Joel Embiid.
His role as an off-court instigator gained more attention. Harrell is now free to sign with any team, with hopes of providing them with frontcourt depth during the latter part of the 2023-24 season.
