[Saba Sports News] The Australian cricket community has rallied behind Greg Chappell, an esteemed figure in Australian cricket facing financial hardships. Chappell, renowned for his batting prowess in the 1970s and 80s, did not have the opportunity for a fundraising testimonial event like many of his peers.
To demonstrate their support, a testimonial lunch was held at the MCG, featuring iconic figures like Ian and Trevor Chappell and hosted by Eddie McGuire. Additionally, a GoFundMe page was established to provide financial assistance to the cricketing legend.
Chappell had an illustrious career, amassing 24 centuries in 87 Test matches. He was also part of the famous trio, alongside Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh, who joined Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket, significantly altering the cricket landscape.
Contrary to the assumption that former cricketers lead a life of luxury, Chappell has revealed that this is not the case for many players from his era. While he is not in dire financial straits, he is not reaping the same benefits as today’s players.
Chappell manages the Chappell Foundation, a charity dedicated to raising funds for homelessness causes. He ensures that every dollar raised goes directly to the cause and takes none for himself. Chappell’s close friend, Peter Maloney, disclosed that Chappell faces more challenges than he openly admits.
“The Chappell Foundation is run by Darshak Mehta, and 100 percent of the money raised goes to distribution,” Maloney stated. “They distribute it annually, leaving no money at the end of each year to start fresh. Although Greg could have taken some money from it, he hasn’t touched a cent, even though he could have.”
