[Saba Sports News] Babar Azam’s tenure as Pakistan captain is in doubt due to the team’s underwhelming showings in the Asia Cup 2023 and the ongoing ODI World Cup. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering alternatives.
Under Babar’s leadership, Pakistan ranks fifth on the World Cup points table with two wins and three losses in five matches, including defeats to arch-rivals India and Afghanistan.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi are rumored replacements for Babar. Only a miraculous semi-final finish might save his captaincy.
A source stated, ‘It is over for Babar because he has been given unbridled power and authority as captain, and he is now being held solely responsible for the Asia Cup and World Cup defeats.’
The source also indicated potential changes in the coaching staff, with a new staff and captain possibly in place for Pakistan’s upcoming Test series in Australia.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, with a successful captaincy record, could lead the Test and ODI sides, while Shaheen Afridi may become the T20 captain. Rizwan has led Pakistan in two games but faced losses, and Shaheen is yet to captain the team.
