[Saba Sports News] In a much-anticipated showdown, India and Bangladesh will face off in the 17th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at Pune’s iconic MCA Stadium on October 19. This match not only rekindles the historic rivalry between these two cricketing nations but also marks a significant moment – their first one-day international encounter in India after a 25-year absence, dating back to 1998.
This upcoming clash between India and Bangladesh has garnered attention and is the long-awaited resurgence of their ODI rivalry on Indian soil, following a remarkable 25-year gap. The last meeting in India between these cricketing giants took place in May 1998 during a memorable tri-series involving India, Bangladesh, and Kenya.
Reflecting on their previous ODI encounter in India, India chose to field first and displayed a stellar bowling performance. They dismantled the Bangladeshi batting lineup early on, reducing them to a precarious 21/3. The relentless pressure from the Indian bowlers led to five more wickets falling within the next 50 runs, leaving the visitors in a dire situation. However, a resilient 44-run partnership for the ninth wicket, led by Hasibul Hossain and Khaled Mashud, salvaged Bangladesh’s hopes as they crossed the 100-run mark.
Nevertheless, Sachin Tendulkar, in a swift two-ball sequence, ended the innings by dismissing Bangladesh for a mere 115 runs. India’s pursuit of 116 runs started strongly, with Tendulkar scoring a brisk 33 and Navjot Singh Sidhu contributing 41 off 52 deliveries. However, India briefly wavered with just 44 runs left and all ten wickets intact, sliding from 72/0 to 107/5 due to a lapse in concentration.
Despite this momentary setback, Ajay Jadeja, unbeaten on 16, guided India to victory, comfortably achieving the target with five wickets in hand and a substantial 124 balls to spare. Anil Kumble, the leg-spin maestro, was awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance in the initial innings, claiming three wickets for a mere 17 runs in his full quota of 10 overs.
