[Saba Sports News] The Memphis Grizzlies have raised concerns about a young player other than Ja Morant. In a recent episode of his podcast, Chris Vernon, who covers the Grizzlies for Grind City Media, shared a troubling story regarding Memphis’ big man, Kenneth Lofton Jr. Vernon revealed that Lofton arrived at training camp this season weighing over 300 pounds.
Vernon expressed his worry, saying, “The Lofton situation is concerning. It really is. To show up weighing over 300 pounds? It’s disappointing.”
Lofton, a 21-year-old who signed a two-way contract with the Grizzlies after going undrafted last year, made a significant impact in the G League. He averaged 20.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game for the Memphis Hustle, earning the G League Rookie of the Year Award. Although Lofton only appeared in 24 NBA games for the Grizzlies, he had a standout performance with a remarkable 42-point, 14-rebound game that showcased his skills.
For context, Lofton officially weighed 275 pounds last season (meaning he gained over 25 pounds in the offseason, as per Vernon’s statement). Lofton’s style of play is often characterized as physical, akin to Zach Randolph, with a strong low-post game. However, with the Grizzlies dealing with frontcourt shortages at the moment, it appears they won’t be able to rely on Lofton this season until he improves his conditioning.
