[Saba Sports News] Pakistan’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in the USA and West Indies ended not only in on-field disappointment but also an ugly off-field incident.
In a viral video, fast bowler Haris Rauf was seen in a heated argument with a fan, needing to be physically restrained by his wife and other personnel. This confrontation stemmed from the frustration and sadness of Pakistan’s players after their dismal performance. The Babar Azam-led side failed to qualify for the Super Eights, crashing out in the group stage.
Entering the competition with hopes of claiming their second T20 world title, Pakistan’s campaign faltered with losses to the USA and arch-rivals India. Although they managed wins over Canada and Ireland, their chances were dashed by a last-over loss to India. The USA vs. Ireland washout confirmed Pakistan’s early exit.
Babar Azam had been reinstated as captain for this event, following last year’s ODI World Cup failure, but his leadership couldn’t prevent another T20 disappointment.
There have been speculations regarding head coach Gary Kirsten’s comments about the team’s environment and unity. Kirsten was candid in his assessment, pointing out the need for addressing these issues in the future. “There’s no unity in Pakistan’s team. They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other; everyone is separated. I’ve worked with many teams, but I’ve never seen such a situation,” Kirsten was quoted by TOI.
