[Saba Sports News] The Indian Premier League General Council (IPL GC) has introduced new rules to address the issue of overseas players withdrawing after being selected in the auction.
During a recent meeting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Bengaluru, the IPL GC established a two-year ban for overseas players who pull out without valid reasons after being bought at auction.
Exceptions will be made for injuries or medical conditions, provided they are confirmed by the player’s home board.
The statement clarified, “Any player who registers for an auction and withdraws after being picked will face a two-season ban unless the withdrawal is due to a confirmed injury or medical condition.”
Additionally, new guidelines for player fees in mini-auctions were introduced. Overseas players must now register for mega auctions to be eligible for future mini-auctions, preventing them from skipping mega auctions to secure higher bids later.
A cap on fees for overseas players in mini-auctions was also implemented. The maximum fee will be either the highest retention price of INR 18 crore or the highest price from the preceding mega auction, whichever is lower. For example, if the highest price in the mega auction is INR 20 crore, the cap will be INR 18 crore.
If the highest price is INR 16 crore, the cap will be INR 16 crore.
These measures were introduced following record-breaking bids in previous auctions, such as Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who were bought for INR 20.50 crore and INR 24.75 crore respectively.
