[Saba Sports News] Former India opener Virender Sehwag grabbed the attention of netizens with his cheeky reply to ex-England captain Michael Vaughan. This comes after England lost to Afghanistan for the first time in history in an ODI, in the 13th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday.
Defending champions England invited Afghanistan to bat first, and they posted a total of 284 runs in 49.5 overs. While chasing, Jos Buttler-led England failed to handle the spin bowling of Afghan spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan, and endured a 69-run defeat.
However, after the match, Vaughan made a prediction on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), in which he wrote, “England in the World Cup semis.”
In response, Sehwag trolled him and humorously wrote, “Not in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2023 . Just one in 8 attempts.” It’s worth noting that after the 1992 World Cup, England only managed to qualify once for semi-final stage of the tournament, and that was in 2019 when they eventually won the trophy.
Moreover, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer, who usually gets actively involved in banters with Vaughan, once again rubbed salt in the wounds of the Englishman by sharing a meme on ‘X’, asking him if he is doing good after England’s recent defeat.
England are currently placed at the fifth position on the points table, with only one match won out of three. The defending champions also suffered a loss to New Zealand in the opening match of the competition in Ahmedabad. England will face South Africa next on 21st October at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium.
