[Saba Sports News] Kapil Dev, India’s first World Cup-winning captain, has raised concerns about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, subtly suggesting that both players may be past their prime.
Kapil, who retired at 35, believes that once a player crosses 34, their future largely depends on fitness. Kohli and Rohit, who recently led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup at the ages of 35 and 36, are still performing well.
Rohit’s late-career batting adjustments have brought remarkable results, while Kohli, considered one of the fittest cricketers, continues to show resilience. Although Kohli’s recent form has fluctuated, it wasn’t long ago that he delivered a powerful half-century in South Africa.
“As the saying goes, every good thing must come to an end,” Kapil remarked, acknowledging that Kohli and Rohit will eventually retire, leaving a difficult void to fill. While they likely still have much to offer, Kapil emphasized that post-34, a player’s career depends heavily on fitness. “In my opinion, the period between 26 and 34 years is your prime, and thereafter, the fitness of the players will ensure their longevity,” Kapil shared.
Following India’s T20 World Cup win in June, both Kohli and Rohit announced their retirements from the format. With two major ICC titles in 2025 and India already eyeing the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, whether Kohli and Rohit will continue until then remains uncertain. However, Kapil is certain that the duo will give their all for the upcoming challenges.
While Kohli hasn’t openly addressed his retirement plans, he hinted during the IPL that once he’s done, he’ll take a break from the spotlight. Rohit, on the other hand, made it clear that he intends to continue, stating, “I’m not going anywhere anytime soon,” and he aims to captain India for as long as his fitness allows.
