[Saba Sports News] According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Grizzlies are set to add veteran big man Bismack Biyombo to their roster. Biyombo, who is 31 years old, remained unsigned throughout the entire offseason and the early part of the regular season.
Memphis currently faces a significant void at the center position following the recent announcement that starting center Adams would undergo season-ending surgery. This development left the Grizzlies with limited frontcourt depth, especially given the extended absence of another key bench player.
Reportedly, the Grizzlies are bringing in Biyombo under an exemption created due to Ja Morant’s 25-game suspension. Biyombo is renowned for his shot-blocking abilities and high-energy style of play. In his limited role last season with the Phoenix Suns, he averaged 4.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. Biyombo has also contributed to playoff runs for three different teams: Phoenix, Toronto, and Charlotte.
The Grizzlies typically deploy a frontcourt duo of Xavier Tillman and the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Jaren Jackson Jr., in their starting lineup. With the arrival of Biyombo, he is expected to assume the bulk of the backup center minutes and may even have opportunities to start in specific matchups.
