[Saba Sports News] Brandon Miller, the former Crimson Tide basketball star and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Jamea Harris, who was tragically killed in a shooting earlier this year near the University of Alabama.
According to the lawsuit, Harris’ mother, DeCarla Heard, alleges that Miller played a significant role in her daughter’s death on January 14. The lawsuit claims that Miller arrived at the location of the shooting with a firearm, which was subsequently used by Michael Davis to fatally shoot Harris.
Heard’s suit contends that Miller, Davis, and former Tide basketball player Darius Miles were together earlier that night at clubs in Tuscaloosa. Miller left the group because of a long line at one of the bars, and Miles left his gun in Miller’s vehicle before Miller departed. Later, Davis and Miles left the bar and got into a dispute with Harris, her boyfriend, and her cousin.
Heard claims that Miles texted Miller, now a player for the Charlotte Hornets, requesting his “joint” because someone was using aggressive language without the intention or ability to back it up. Miller allegedly arrived shortly afterward, and Miles retrieved the gun from Miller’s car, eventually passing it to Davis.
According to the lawsuit, Davis approached Harris, her boyfriend, and her cousin in a car and fired shots, striking Harris in the face and causing her death. Heard is seeking damages, asserting that Miller, Davis, and Miles should have foreseen the potential harm resulting from bringing a dangerous weapon to a dispute and discharging it.
Miller’s attorney previously stated that Miller had never touched the gun, was not involved in its exchange to Davis, and had no knowledge of any illegal activity involving the firearm. Miller was never charged with a crime.
Both Miles and Davis are facing capital murder charges for their alleged roles in Harris’ death. Despite these legal challenges, Miller signed a lucrative contract with the Hornets and is expected to be a strong contender for Rookie of the Year this season.
