[Saba Sports News] Veteran spinner Piyush Chawla, still going strong in the IPL at 35, shows that “passion for the game knows no age limit.” A two-time World Cup winner, Chawla recently addressed speculation about his retirement.
When asked about his plans, he humorously shared a conversation he had with young cricketer Prithvi Shaw.
“A while ago, Prithvi said, ‘PC bhai, bas karo yaar ab.’ I replied, ‘I played with Sachin paaji, now I’m playing with his son. I’ll retire after playing with your son,'” Chawla recalled during an appearance on Shubhankar Mishra’s show.
Throughout his career, Chawla has had the honor of playing alongside cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and is now mentoring the next generation of talent. Debuting for India in 2006, Chawla was part of the winning squads in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, both led by MS Dhoni.
While Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, Chawla has yet to announce his own plans to step away.
When asked who would retire first between him and Dhoni, Chawla playfully pointed to his former captain, saying, “Mahi bhai.” Mohammed Shami also shared Dhoni’s perspective on retirement, revealing that Dhoni once said, “‘First, when you get bored, and second, when you feel like you’re about to be kicked out.'”
Shami added, “Mahi bhai’s take is always, ‘Dekha jayega’ (let’s see),” highlighting Dhoni’s calm approach to his future in the game.
