[Saba Sports News] Sri Lanka Cricket has announced the lifting of the ban on Danushka Gunathilaka, who faced serious sexual assault allegations in Australia. The decision, ratified by the board’s executive committee on October 13, comes with a caution for Gunathilaka to always uphold his status as a representative of the nation in his future actions.
Gunathilaka was arrested during the 2022 T20I World Cup in Australia but was later cleared of the charges in a trial. With the ban lifted, the all-rounder can now make his return to international cricket after a prolonged absence.
The SLC media release stated, “After careful evaluation of Mr. Gunathilaka’s exoneration and with due consideration to his cricketing career and its impact on the cricketing ambitions of the nation, the Inquiry Panel…unanimously recommended an immediate lifting of his cricketing ban, allowing him to resume regular cricket activities and return to national duty.”
Regarding Sri Lanka’s performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, they have struggled, losing all three games played so far against South Africa, Pakistan, and Australia. Their next match is against the Netherlands, and their performance in this upcoming game will be closely watched.
