Josh Davey, a seasoned seamer from Somerset, is noticeably missing from Scotland’s 15-man provisional selection for the Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA next month. However, Michael Jones and Brad Wheal have returned.
The only member of the Sussex 2nd XI squad to be changed from the Tri-Series squad is seam bowler Gavin Main. Jones and Wheal, who play for Durham and Hampshire, respectively, were not included in Scotland’s squad for this month’s T20 Tri-Series against Netherlands and Ireland. However, their counties have cleared them to play in the World Cup.
But Davey is not playing. He has been a big part of Somerset’s success this season, taking crucial wickets in their two-day victory over Essex at Taunton in this week’s County Championship match. As a result, the club is now only two points behind leaders in Division One.
Neither Davey nor his T20I-capped Somerset teammate Andrew Umeed were declared eligible for selection for the World Cup. Given his depth of knowledge, Davey’s absence is especially detrimental. He participated in all three of Scotland’s previous T20 World Cup campaigns (2016), (2021), and (2022), taking nine wickets at 13.66 in the latter.
“It was a really difficult selection meeting and it’s never easy getting it down to a squad of 15,” Doug Watson, Scotland’s head coach, said. “It was ultimately about getting the balance of the squad just right and we feel we’ve done that here.
“It’s good that we’ve got some of our county players available, and we are really excited with the 15 we’ve chosen, so now we can look forward to what lies ahead.”
