[Saba Sports News] London’s iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, often referred to as the Home of Cricket, is set for another substantial redevelopment project. The venue, which has hosted 149 Test matches, 85 ODIs, and 12 T20Is, is undergoing a £61.8 million upgrade of the Tavern and Allen stands, authorized by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the owners of the ground. This redevelopment follows the £53 million renovation of the Compton and Edrich stands completed in 2021, which expanded the seating capacity to 31,000 and updated the facilities surrounding the press box.
The current project, scheduled to start in September, aims to add 1,100 new seats by introducing an extra tier to both the Tavern and Allen stands, increasing the overall capacity to 38,000. The entire structures will be demolished and rebuilt, with the Tavern Stand gaining a fourth level. John Graham Construction Ltd has been selected for the main construction work, with WilkinsonEyre providing architectural expertise, aiming for completion by 2027.
Robert Ebdon, MCC Estates Director, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “The redevelopment of the Tavern and Allen stands will complete our stand development program, ensuring Lord’s remains a world-class venue for cricket.” He added, “The stands will also enhance our sustainability credentials, and we are eager to begin the construction phase, working with our consultants Buro Happold, Gardiner & Theobold, and Arcadis.”
This investment will not only increase seating capacity but also improve catering, hospitality, and accessibility, vital for maintaining Lord’s status as a premier venue for major cricket matches and events. MCC members have approved the plans, and the construction will be carefully phased to allow continuous cricket activity throughout the redevelopment period.
